About The Chesapeake Urology Advanced Kidney Stone Program

Surgery1Chesapeake Urology's Advanced Kidney Stone program is dedicated to the comprehensive diagnosis, advanced surgical treatment and medical management of large and complex kidney stones and minimally invasive surgical techniques in upper tract minimally invasive reconstruction. We have one of the few programs of its kind in the country, led by an extraordinary team of endourologists and experienced support staff.

Under the direction of Drs. Davalos and Abbott, the Advanced Kidney Stone program has one of the highest case volumes in the country. They have pioneered surgical techniques including PCNL, Tubeless PCNL and Minimally Invasive PCNL (MIP).

Serving as active thought-leaders and innovators in the field, they have been on the forefront of changing the way in which large and complex kidney stones are treated and surgically removed in the current era. This program is one of the busiest in the world with respect to minimally invasive surgical management of kidney stone disease, and is currently the only site in the country performing ambulatory tubeless PCNL surgery in an ambulatory surgery center with same day discharge.

The Summit Ambulatory Surgery Center is a 7,329 square foot, state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), specially equipped with advanced technology for performing the complex percutaneous renal surgery. In addition to Drs. Davalos and Abbott, the ASC is staffed by surgical nurses specially trained in the PCNL procedures, providing patients with superior care before and after surgery.

Chesapeake Urology’s Advanced Kidney Stone program also incorporates comprehensive metabolic medical management of kidney stones into overall patient care. Following a PCNL or tubeless PCNL surgery, the doctors identify what caused the kidney stone(s) to form and develop a prevention plan to help keep future stones from recurring. Regular follow-up exams and preventative care, including recommendations for behavioral and diet changes, are all part of the program’s emphasis on keeping patients 100% stone free.
