Joel E. Abbott, D.O.

Joel Abbot DODr. Joel Abbott, associate director of the endourology fellowship program, is a board-certified urologist specialized in endourology and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotics and laparoscopy. He completed an Endourology/Laparoscopic fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine under the mentorship of Roger Sur, M.D.   

Dr. Abbott is the associate director of Chesapeake Urology’s Advanced Kidney Stone program. He primarily is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with kidney stones, particularly large and complex kidney stones. 

He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA and completed his Osteopathic Rotating Internship and General Surgery Internship at West Virginia University, Charleston Area Medical Center. Dr. Abbott completed his residency in Urologic Surgery at Michigan State University, St. John Providence Health Osteopathic Division in Detroit, where he served as Chief Resident three consecutive years.

Dr. Abbott has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including the American College of Osteopathic Surgeon’s Erwin Literary Award, the Michigan Osteopathic Association’s Scientific Research Award, the American Urological Association’s Dr. Edwin L. Thirlby Award, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons Resident Achievement Award, the Mark Cummings, Ph.D. Award for Outstanding Leadership in Medical Scholarship, and the American Osteopathic Foundation’s Outstanding Resident of the Year. As a former enlisted active duty Marine, he also earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional and leadership achievement. 

Dr. Abbott’s work has been published in numerous textbooks and prestigious medical journals including the Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology and The Canadian Journal of Urology. He has given countless presentations in local, regional, national, and international arenas on his research and work in the minimally invasive treatment of large and complex kidney stones. In addition, he serves as a content reviewer for the American Urological Association’s Journal of Urology and Urology Practice.

Dr. Abbott is a member of a number of professional organizations including the American Urological Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association and the Endourological Society.
